Problems (and Solutions) to Public Education.

Public Education

Kuriji here with a school assignment! Here, I'll name some "problems" a lot of people have with school. Not just students, but with EVERYONE affiliated to school; including parents. So, without further delay, here's the most common problems I find.

  1. Breaks
  2. Art's aren't mandatory
  3. Socialization isn't common
  4. School weeks are too long
Now, I'm not much of a fan for some of these, others I believe should be in school, but I'll go through them all anyways. Let's start with breaks.

Breaks

Some people believe that Summer Break is the worst break to have, people won't retain much. A solution to this provided by my teacher is to shorten all breaks, but make them more frequent. Now, I enjoy summer break. We all do! But is this a good solution to it? Let's go through the Pros and Cons:

ProsCons
People retain school.More stress is more likely
Teachers are paid more.Teachers are paid more.

You have to pay for the food.

Tax will raise

OK, so I couldn't think of many pros to it. Yes, people will be able to retain school information more. Yes, teachers will get paid more. However, people are more likely to get stressed out. Also, there's the worry about teachers getting paid more. Who's pocket is it going out of? The school's. They don't exactly have a big budget to begin with... I come from a bit of a ghetto school, and we could use a bit more than just year-round schooling. People here are smart, but the school needs a good remodel.

Fine Arts

Another problem people mention is that the fine art's aren't mandatory. A solution to this is that people are required to take a fine-art's class. We were discussing this in class, and found that not many people like to prance around in leotards, or speak in old-English, or carry a big instrument for that matter... People like doing what other's wouldn't consider "art" like construction, welding, and other's similar. I have decided to include this because not everyone likes Band, Choir, Orchestra, and Theater. Now let's go onto the pros and cons:

ProsCons
Encourages creativeness.Fine-arts (band, orchestra, etc.) is REALLY expensive.
It will broaden people's views on fine arts.Less Likely for band-wide trips**
People will make friends.*Band, choir, and orchestra will be PACKED.

*It will at least ENCOURAGE them to get out of their shell... If they have one. (This is also a solution to #3, socialization isn't common.)
**It's easy to take 15-20 people on a nice band trip with nice buses... It's not so easy to take 150-200 students on a nice bus.

School Weeks

Some people believe that the school weeks are too long. (No, not just students, teachers too.) A good portion of the government has 4-day weekdays. People are asking, "Why not school?"

ProsCons
Less expenses for the SchoolStudents will not retain as much
Less likely to have stress on studentsTeachers will get about the same amount of work*
Teachers will STILL get paid about the same
*Could be a pro...
This is neither a pro nor a con, but the rest of the government is doing it...

Please note: this list is nowhere NEAR complete. If you have a suggestion to add, I will consider it, just simply put it in the comments. I am going to try my best to update this as frequently as possible. Also, if you see a pro/con I have missed, please suggest it and I will definitely consider it. This was last updated 4/16/2014. Have a nice day!
